 2023 Preview 


       Alma Bryant finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Alma Bryant finished seventh in Class 7A region one with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Hurricanes last playoff victory came during the 1999 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Alma Bryant was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Hurricanes want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.8 points a game.

       Since 2010, the Alma Bryant football program has struggled with a record of 28-104.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Alma Bryant has not won much with a record of 87-173. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 7A and 324th in the AHSAA. The Hurricanes have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2003.




       The Hurricanes are led by head coach Bart Sessions who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-15 over the past two seasons at Alma Bryant. The Hurricanes have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sessions. Over the course of his career, Coach Sessions' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won two region championships.

       The Hurricanes have not won five games in any season since 2000. Could this be the year Coach Sessions gets Alma Bryant back to that old form? Alma Bryant has an easy non-region schedule in 2023.

       This season, the Hurricanes will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one.

       The Hurricanes open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Holtville on Friday, September 1 at Hurricane Stadium. Last year the Holtville Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 3-8 and in fourth place in Class 5A region three. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Central Clay County by a score of 50-0.

       Alma Bryant and Holtville have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Hurricanes have a 2-0-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Alma Bryant winning by a score of 35-29.

       Alma Bryant lost 7A All-State  offensive lineman Billy Gilmore to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

From 1947 until his retirement in 1992 Glenn Daniel's teams won 302 games at Pine Hill and Luverne. He was the winningest coach in state history until 2010.
